BJP backs Chidambaram, says no need to quit
BJP says Chidambaram deserves the support of all the political parties in the fight against the Maoists.

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has supported Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and said that he should not resign over the massacre of security personnel by Maoists in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district.

"The Home Minister has expressed his desire to step down. BJP doesn't want him to resign, especially at this moment. If he resigns now, it will be celebrated as a victory by the Maoists, which is unacceptable," said BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy.

Rudy said that Chidambaram deserved the support of all the political parties in the fight against the Maoists.

"We think Chidambaram deserves the support of his party. He needs to come clean. He needs to clear the air as to whether he is getting a free hand to deal with Naxalism or not," he said.

"Unfortunately, Chidambaram has become a victim of his own idiom. We are not interested in his confessional statements. The need of the hour is inspirational statements," he added.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram had reportedly offered to resign on Friday taking responsibility for the Dantewada massacre in which the Maoists butchered 76 security personnel. However, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh rejected Chidambaram's offers to resign.

Chidambaram reportedly met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh taking "full responsibility" for the Dantewada attack on a CRPF patrol party and offered to step down.
