Ranchi: BJP on Wednesday demanded that the Election Commission hold "early" elections in Jharkhand saying only a democratically elected government can deal with drought and law and order problem in the state.
All the 21 BJP MLAs in the 82-member Assembly had resigned to press for early elections in the state which is under President's Rule since January.
"The BJP delegation led by state unit chief Raghuvar Das met Election Commissioner S Y Qureshi and demanded holding of early elections in Jharkhand," senior party leader Yashwant Sinha told reporters.
He said the delegation informed Qureshi that "the EC is in its jurisdiction to hold Assembly elections in the state six months prior to the end of the term of the Assembly which is on March 10 next year".
Jharkhand BJP Legislators Quit
All 21 BJP legislators in Jharkhand on Wednesday submitted their resignations to demand immediate Assembly elections in the state that has been under President's rule since January 19.
The legislators handed their resignations to Governor K Shankar Narayan.
Elections had been announced in three states - Haryana, Maharashtra and Arunachal Pradesh - but not in Jharkhand, said state BJP President Raghuvar Das.
The party, he said, is demanding that the state Assembly be immediately dissolved and elections held.
"While extending President's Rule, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram had assured Parliament that elections would be held in Jharkhand after the monsoon. But this had not happened," Das said, adding that the governor was trying to create an environment in favour of the Congress.
"In my state of Jharkhand the NREGA has become a means for the Congress party to fund itself. They are using fund from the NREGA to build their election war chest" — BJP leader, Yashwant Sinha to CNN-IBN
