The opposition BJP on Monday made a scathing attack on Nitish Kumar government for not declaring the state as "drought-hit" which it said reflects the government's "indifference" towards the common man. About 443 blocks out of a total of 534 have experienced deficient rainfall this monsoon which has hit agriculture hard but still the state government is not declaring Bihar as "drought-hit," former Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi told reporters.
Due to shortfall of rain, only 50 per cent of paddy plantation has been possible in the state while in five districts of Nawada, Nalanda, Jamui, Sheikhpura and Lakisharai its as low as 5 per cent, Sushil Modi said. In the month of June-July against normal rainfall of 533 mm, the state has witnessed only 369 mm rainfall, he said.
In a scathing attack on the CM, Modi, who used to seat by his side till one-and-a-half month back, said Kumar who is looking after 18 ministries seems to have no time for problem of drought. The senior BJP leader demanded the CM to call an all-party meeting on drought situation in Bihar and said if does not do it soon a party delegation would meet Governor DY Patil in this connection.
The BJP leader said the Nitish Kumar government which was enjoying "cordial" relations with the Congress led UPA after the split should get the state declared as "drought-hit" and acquire financial benefit from the Centre.
