The institutions in India offer various categories and quotas to the aspirants, making the process of admission easier and smoother for those who need it the most. Similarly, people suffering from certain disabilities have a right to admission to any choice of course. Keeping that in mind, let us know what is disability quota, how it works and how to avail of it.
As per the information given, reservations for an individual suffering from a disability have been increased by a margin of four per cent, under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. This law is applied to every prestigious institution in the country. The following list gives information on the percentage of reservations, provided by the top institutions of India:
– IIT (Indian Institute of Technology)- 4 per cent
– NIT (National Institute of Technology)- 5 per cent
– IIM (Indian Institute of Management)- 5 per cent
– UPSC (Union Public Service Commission)- 4 per cent
Even though 4 per cent of the UPSC seats are reserved for people with disabilities, there have been cases where the authenticity of the candidate was questioned, who opted for the quota. So, to avail of the PWD quota, a candidate should have a certificate that can be verified by the authorities. If an individual is found to have at least 40 per cent disability, then they are considered to be eligible for the UPSC PWD quota.
