The BJP government in Madhya Pradesh has appointed senior MLA Girish Gautam to the post of Speaker in MP assembly who represents Devtalab seat in the Vindhya area.
Gautam filed his nomination for the post on Sunday and as the opposition Congress has announced not to field anyone for the post, the senior MLA is sure to be elected as the Speaker.
Incidentally, Gautam had defeated Sriniwas Tiwari, the former assembly speaker from the Congress party in the year 2003. The speaker will be elected from the Vindhya region almost after 17 years.
The BJP has always taken care of the Vindhya region and my priorities will be to ensure the interests of the MLAs, Gautam said after filing his nomination.
An active part of student politics, Gautam has been fighting for the rights of farmers-laborers since the year 1977. After winning as an MLA first time in the year 2003, Gautam has remained a member of various committees.
MPCC chief Kamal Nath accused the BJP of not having any faith in parliamentary traditions, saying that the post of the speaker goes to the ruling party and that of the deputy speaker to the opposition. He however affirmed that the Congress party will stick to its stand and will help in the election of the speaker.
Former minister Rajendra Shukl on the occasion claimed that now the regional imbalance has been sorted out in the Shivraj government. He added that Vindhya has offered so many seats to the BJP government so this decision is satisfying.
To add, a party veteran from the Vindhya region, Shukl is also not part of the Shivraj cabinet after the party had accommodated Jyotiraditya Scindia supporters while forming the government last year.
BJP minister Arvind Singh Bhadauria said that the Congress party had broken the tradition in its government so the BJP will now keep the post of Dy speaker as well.
Led by Gautam, the four-time MLA, Vindhya leaders had been demanding the post of assembly speaker for long as none from the region was appointed as a minister. The Budget session of the MP assembly gets underway from Monday.
