New Delhi: Nearly a third of the candidates aspiring for a place in the Bihar Assembly face criminal charges, include murder, extortion, kidnapping and robbery.
'Bihar Election Watch', a joint study by an NGO, Bihar-based Lok Sambad and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) , has found 28 per cent of the candidates contesting for the four-phased Assembly polls in Bihar face criminal charges.
Stats show 446 of a total of 1,607 candidates, cutting across party lines, in the fray for the 243 Assembly constituencies have criminal backgrounds.
The study is based on affidavits submitted by the candidates to the Election Commission while filing nominations.

In the last assembly elections, of the 1,528 candidates fielded by main political parties, 454 had criminal cases pending in courts.
And of the 243 winners, 102 were accused in some criminal case or the other.
