Chavan only talks, does nothing: Shiv Sena

Mumbai: Hitting out at Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday said that he pitied him.

"I feel pity for him. It is unfortunate that he is the Chief Minister of the state," Uddhav said.

Chavan had on Wednesday said that Sena patriarch Bal Thackeray will become inconsequential after the February 16 Mumbai civic polls.

Mentioning "piles of pending files" with the Chief Minister, Uddhav slammed Chavan over Indu Mill land issue. "He only talks, but does nothing. They had said that by January 31, 2012 the land will be allotted for construction of (Dr BR Ambedkar's) memorial, but nothing has happened yet," Uddhav said, after releasing the joint manifesto of Shiv Sena-BJP-RPI alliance here.

State BJP president Sudhir Mungantiwar, Republican Party of India chief Ramdas Athawale, Dalit Panther leader Namdeo Dhasal, and senior BJP leader Vinod Tawde were present.

Uddhav expressed confidence that Sena-BJP's rule in the Mumbai corporation would continue.

Among other things, Sena-BJP-RPI alliance is resorting to appeal to Marathi vote. Senior Sena leader Subhash Desai said that Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation would build

Maharashtra Bhawan "to conserve the Marathi pride".

Mungantiwar said that Congress-NCP manifesto had nothing new. "They can use the same manifesto in 2014 assembly polls," he quipped.

An inspection committee would be set up to monitor the works done by the BMC, he said.

However, the assurance on abolition of octroi, for which BJP was pressing hard, could not be included in the manifesto as there was no alternative source of revenue, Uddhav said.

"Octroi is an important source of revenue and it cannot be abolished suddenly."
