The Left parties had been ruling Siliguri Municipal Corp since 1982.

Siliguri: The juggernaut of the Oposition Congress-Trinamool Congress on Tuesday mowed down the CPI(M)-led Left Front in the

47-seat Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC), ending their 27-year rule.

At final count the Congress had bagged 15 seats, Trinamool

Congress(AITC) 14 and one went to AITC-supported Independent Ranjan Sil Sharma, who won ward no 36.

The Left parties, which had been ruling since 1982, had to be contend with only 17 seats in the SMC, upgraded in 1996. While the CPI(M) secured 15 seats, RSP and Forward Bloc managed one each. The CPI and BJP drew a blank.

In 2004 the Congress bagged six seats, AITC four and BJP one. The Left Front had garnered 36 seats--CPI(M) 30, CPI, RSP and Forward Bloc two each.

Today's result was a major blow to the Left in North Bengal after the May Parliamentary polls.

After the Lok Sabha debacle, the CPI(M)-led Front lost most of

the Municipal polls in June. The LF, however, had fared better in the Lok Sabha polls in North Bengal.

Counting of votes began this morning for the 47 seats, which went to polls on Sunday.

Important leaders, who licked the dust, were Deputy Mayor Dilip

Roy of RSP and Councillor Parimal Mitra of CPI(M). Mr Roy lost to Congress' Sanjay Pathak, while Mr Mitra was defeated by Swapan Chanda of Congress.

CPI(M)'s Munshi Nurul Islam, who had been Mayor since 2004,

however, won the polls in ward 47, defeating his rival Moumita

Majumdar Ghosh of Trinamool Congress.
