Chennai: MDMK General Secretary Vaiko on Wednesday said the Mullaiperiyar dam’s safety could not be trusted with Kerala and the Centre must deploy its own forces.
Citing reports that a wall of the dam in Kerala’s Idukki district had been damaged, Vaiko demanded in a letter to the Prime Minister that the Centre deploy the Central Industrial Security Force.
He alleged that the wall was damaged because of the connivance of authorities guarding the dam and demanded that the Centre ensure that the structure’s height is raised to 142 ft.
Kerala, which has leased the dam to Tamil Nadu, is against raising the height.
Referring to statements made by Kerala Ministers, he said 'there is a genuine apprehension that conspirators with malicious intention would resort to abominable activities to damage and destroy the dam', he said, adding that if any such incident occurred it would be a direct assault on the unity of the country.
MDMK MPs Krishnan and Ravichandran handed over the letter to the Prime Minister on Tuesday at the Chennai airport.
