New Delhi: The Election Commission on Friday extended the deadline given to BJP's Uttar Padesh in-charge Amit Shah by 24 hours to reply on his revenge speech. The Commission had on Monday issued a notice to Narendra Modi's close aide for violating the model code of conduct after his "revenge" remark he made in Muzaffarnagar in western Uttar Pradesh, reports said.
On Thursday, Shah had allegedly exhorted Jats in Muzaffarnagar to use the elections as an opportunity to seek "revenge" for the riots that erupted in September last year.
An FIR has also been lodged in Bijnore against BJP prime minister nominee Narendra Modi's aide Shah for allegedly inciting the public through his "revenge" remark.
The FIR came even as election authorities in UP sent a CD of Shah's controversial remarks along with the report of the district election officer to the Election Commission.
Sources had said the chief electoral officer of UP had taken cognisance of Shah's statement and had sought the CD along with a detailed report from the district authorities.
Shah's speech came under attack from different parties, which accused him of vitiating the atmosphere in the region, which witnessed one of the worst communal riots between Hindus and Muslims in Muzaffarnagar.
The BJP had defended Shah on Saturday even as the Congress demanded his arrest. The BJP said he had talked of taking revenge on the Congress and his statement was not against any particular community.
The communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining areas left 61 dead and forced more than 50,000 flee their homes.
