Facing criticism, SP bans media from Saifai carnival
The Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh is under fire for organising its annual event, the Saifai Mahotsav.

Lucknow: Facing criticism over the Saifai carnival, the Samajwadi Party government on Wednesday banned TV crews from entering the festival. The Uttar Pradesh government of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is under fire for organising its annual event, the Saifai Mahotsav, at a time when the future of Muzaffarnagar riot victims in the state remains uncertain, with some victims being forced to leave the relief camps.

Bollywood stars Salman Khan and Madhuri Dikshit are set to perform at the event. Actors Soha Ali Khan and Ranveer Singh are also slated to attend the event.

Akhilesh Yadav, however, defended the event saying it was a party tradition. SamajwadI Party leader Azam Khan said that his party had never ignored the riot victims.

"Mulayam Singh and I had planned to go there together but this will cause trouble to the people. If you go there and ask, I don't think you will find a single person who will blame us for not visiting. In fact they know that our visit would've caused more trouble rather than helping them," said SP leader Azam Khan.
