Taking a leaf out of the book of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has said in many BJP meetings recently that the only caste one needs to focus on in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections is GYAN (Gareeb Yuva Ananadata and Mahila), the party after reaching out to the youth and women through various programmes will now have a special focus on rural voters, especially the poor, sources have told CNN-News18.
The initiative ‘Go to the villages’ is expected to start around the end of this month. This ‘gram parikrama’ (visit to villages) will focus on reaching out to all potential voters across every village in rural India. The drive, which is expected to go on for nearly two months, will see BJP leaders reaching out to at least five to eight villages each day in every district. The attempt is to cover close to 1.4 lakh villages across the country.
Ministers, MPs, MLAs, state leaders, and office bearers of the party will knock on every door possible, to explain to the people the work that has been done for the upliftment of the rural regions by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s central government.
“Leaders will hold chaupals and interesting campaigns using technology, street corner meetings, etc, including spending a night in the villages to understand the challenges faced by rural India,” a source aware of the plans told CNN-News18.
Not only will the leaders who go on the ground check for possible beneficiaries who have not availed of central schemes so far, but also understand from them and get feedback on how to make these programmes more effective and implementable, said another source.
The message that will go on to the ground is that this is a government that has worked tirelessly for the poor and marginalised by introducing schemes like Swachh Bharat Mission, Ayushman Bharat Yojana, Pradhan Manri Ujjwala Yojana, etc.
A recent NITI Aayog report revealed that 24.82 crore people escaped multidimensional poverty in the last nine years. Findings of the discussion paper ‘Multidimensional Poverty in India since 2005-06’ give credit for this remarkable achievement to significant initiatives of the government to address all dimensions of poverty between 2013-14 and 2022-23.
According to the discussion paper, India has registered a significant decline in multidimensional poverty from 29.17% in 2013-14 to 11.28% in 2022-23, i.e., a reduction of 17.89 percentage points. Uttar Pradesh registered the largest decline in the number of poor with 5.94 crore people escaping multidimensional poverty during the last nine years, followed by Bihar at 3.77 crore, Madhya Pradesh at 2.30 crore, and Rajasthan at 1.87 crore.
