Howrah by-poll: TMC defeats CPM by 27,000 votes
The results in the by-poll is seen as the trust vote for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after the chit fund scam hit West Bengal.

Howrah: The Trinamool Congress candidate Prasun Banerjee has won the Howrah by-poll over its CPI(M) rival Sridip Bhattacharya by 27,000 votes. This, however, was almost 10,000 votes less than the previous TMC victory at the seat.

The result in the by-poll is seen as the trust vote for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after the chit fund scam hit West Bengal.

The election has been necessitated following the death of Trinamool Congress MP Ambica Banerjee on April 25. In the 2009 General Election, Banerjee had won the seat by 37,392 votes against CPI(M) candidate Swadesh Chakraborty.

The polling on Sunday saw 64 per cent voter turnout with no reports of violence.

Congress candidate Sanatan Mukherjee was in third spot polling over 96,000 votes.

The sources said that counting of 300 votes in one EVM which developed a technical malfunction would be taken up before the official declaration of the result.

Senior TMC leader and Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee told reporters that the poll result would give a boost to the party before next month's crucial Panchayat Elections.

The result prove that people reposed their faith on the performance of Mamata Banerjee government in the past two years, he also said.
