New Delhi: With just three months to go for the Delhi elections, infighting has already begun in the Bharatiya Janata Party state unit over who will be their chief ministerial candidate. With the tagline 'Nayi Soch Nayi Ummeed', one will find many similar posters of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi if one drives through East Delhi. What catches the eye is the absence of senior leaders. To avoid another controversy, BJP's publicity unit came out with a clarification. "The posters being shown everywhere are not official ones, this is an individual exercise," BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.
While its true that these posters have been put up by a member of BJP's Delhi unit, Om Prakash Sharma, someone who is close to Arun Jaitley, they also reflect a certain amount of indiscipline within the state unit. Along with Modi, one can also see posters of Delhi BJP President Vijay Goel who is desperate to be the CM candidate. Sources say the state president's efforts to promote himself ahead of Delhi elections haven't gone down well.
Another group within the BJP is promoting Delhi leader Harshvardhan as an alternative to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. Many feel he will be a better bet. When asked about leadership chage, BJP chief Rajnath Singh said, "This decision will be taken by the Parliamentary board in a few days. There's no infighting."
Sushma Swaraj, Madan Lal Khurana and VK Malhotra, all of them have lost to Sheila Dikshit in the last three assembly polls. Party insiders say internal squabbling over the top job has been hurting their electoral prospects.
'A picture speaks a thousand words' - this phrase is very apt for BJP's Delhi unit where there are different individuals trying to portray themselves as possible chief ministerial candidates. And this very frankly is the challenge for Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari to first choose a credible face and then make sure there is no infighting. So that the party puts up a united front.
