Jaitley questions PM's statement on CBI raids at Stalin's residence
Jaitley questions PM's statement on CBI raids at Stalin's residence
The PM, in his statement, had said that the government did not order the raids and it was CBI's own probe.

New Delhi: Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley has criticised the Centre after CBI raids at DMK party leader MK Stalin's residence in Chennai were stopped earlier on Thursday. Questioning the Prime Minister, who called the timing of the raids unfortunate and said that the government didn't order them, Jaitley asked what was the need to stop the raids if the agency was merely doing its work.

"It is an interference in the CBI's work if the government got it stopped. And if the government was actually interfering, it is answerable to the accusation that the CBI is being misused," Jaitley said.

He added, "However, if the CBI is working as per the law, the government did not have any right to interfere. If the PM's statement is accepted, it's the CBI's normal course of search. The government does not have any right to stop it."

The opposition attacked the government for what it called was a clear case of political vendetta, as the raids came days after DMK withdrew support to the coalition government. BJP leader Prakash Javadekar said, "This raid proves that the government misuses the CBI, it's a politically-motivated raid. The government is willing to do anything to stay in power. We will raise this issue in Parliament."

The Samajwadi Party also called it a political revenge. "This is a case of politics of revenge. SP will never accept this. If Congress thinks this will scare us, it is not possible," SP leader Naresh Aggarwal said.

The CBI had earlier said that the agency was only looking for an imported car after a complaint by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). However, it called off the raids as there was no FIR against Stalin, who is the son of DMK chief M Karunanidhi.

Stalin has warned of legal action. "I am being targeted. It is quiet clear, why I am being targeted. We will face the case legally. I am unaware of the reasons for the CBI raid," he said.
