Kanpur doctors' strike: Police lathicharge protesting BJP workers
Thousands of doctors are on strike across UP to protest what they call the lawlessness of the Samajwadi Party.

Lucknow: Bharatiya Janata Party workers who took out a protest march towards Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's residence in support of striking doctors were lathicharged by police. Thousands of doctors are on strike across UP to protest what they call the lawlessness of the Samajwadi Party.

"Why didn't the Akhilesh government take the matter seriously? Had the government taken the right steps from the start the matter could have been handled," said BJP leader Vijay Bahadur Pathak.

The doctors' strike entered its fourth day in Kanpur on Tuesday. They have been demanding the suspension of Kanpur SSP Yasaswi Yadav following an attack on junior doctors on Friday.

The strike has spread across the state and beyond as several government hospitals in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi joined the agitation on Monday. In Delhi, doctors from AIIMS, Lady Hardinge Medical College and other colleges are expected to hold a dharna at Jantar Mantar today. Resident doctors of AIIMS have said they will observe a 'black badge day' on Tuesday as a gesture of support.

The Indian Medical Association described the incident as a "highly condemnable and shameful act".

A clash had broken out on Friday night between supporters of SP MLA Irfan Solanki and junior doctors of the Kanpur college and the police had resorted to lathicharge arresting 36 junior doctors.

"Doctors must understand that their responsibility is to treat people. However we will send an an official to investigate what happened that day," said Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.
