The West Bengal CM had written a letter to the Prime Minister objecting over the Farakka Barrage water-sharing with Bangladesh.

New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to arrive in Delhi ahead of her meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that's scheduled for Wednesday. Mamata is expected to flag her concerns about the Farakka Barrage and Gorkhaland.

Mamata is concerned that an excess of water from the Ganga has reached Bangladesh because of a broken sluice gate on the Farakka Barrage.

The West Bengal Chief Minister may also bring up the Gorkhaland issue during her meeting.

Mamata had written a letter to the Prime Minister objecting over the Farakka Barrage water-sharing with Bangladesh on Sunday.

In her letter, Mamata had said that a majority of water from the Farakka barrage is going to Bangladesh instead of staying in India. She also called it a 'man-made conspiracy' and urged that it must be stopped.

Reportedly, two gates were broken at the Farakka Barrage leading to a total drainage of 82801 cusecs of water into Bangladesh when the country is only supposed to receive 35,000 cusecs of water.

Excess water drainage to Bangladesh from the Farakka has considerably reduced the water level of Bhagirati in India. The feeder canal which supplies Bhagirati, should receive at least 40,000 cusecs of water, but presently because of excess drainage, it is receiving only 20,000 cusecs.

Water level at the barrage has gone down from 72 feet to 65.8 feet. Despite previous work orders for the two gates to be repaired, nothing has been done so far.

What's your reaction?
