New Delhi: Speaking exclusively to CNN-News18, Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi said he wants the government to apologise to Subedar Ram Kishen Grewal’s family.
Rahul was denied permission to take part in the candle light march held in memory of Subedar Ram Kishan Grewal, who committed suicide over the one rank, one pension issue.
Congress claimed that Rahul Gandhi was detained, though the police deny such a claim.
Earlier in the day, Union Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh on found himself in a new controversy after he hinted at a conspiracy behind the suicide of ex-serviceman Subedar Ram Kishan Grewal and termed him a Congress worker.
Speaking to media persons Singh on Thursday said, “He was a Congress worker who fought Sarpanch elections on Congress ticket. His suicide is unfortunate.”
“We want to know how did he procure Sulpha tablets and who gave it to him? Also, it needs to be probed how a man can have a conservation with his son over a cell phone after consuming poison,” Singh added.
“His issue was with the bank and not with OROP. If he had reached out to us and didn’t get help, then it was our fault. He was a Congress worker and who fought Sarpanch election on Congress ticket. His suicide is unfortunate,” he added.
Meanwhile, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said that Grewal cannot be termed a martyr as he had committed suicide.
“Shaheed’ are those who lay down their lives at the border, not who commit suicide,” Haryana CM ML Khattar told the media.
The Army veteran’s suicide on Tuesday over the delay in OROP implementation seems to have taken a dramatic turn with political parties indulging in a slugfest over the issue.
The deceased Subedar Ram Kishan Grewal’s body was cremated in Bhiwani, Haryana in the presence of several political leaders cutting across party line.
Earlier, Leaders of all political parties had started making a beeline to Bhiwani on Thursday to pay their tributes to the deceased Subedar Grewal.
On Wednesday the political drama touched a new low in the national capital with top leaders indulging in blamegame with the Centre over the OROP issue and getting detained by the Delhi police after they tried to meet the family of the ex-serviceman who ended his life on the lawns of a government building at Janpath in the heart of the national capital.
Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy CM Manish Sisodia were detained at different locations in Delhi.
