New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday disposed of Aam Aadmi Patry's plea for holding election in Delhi. The development took place after the Centre informed the court that the assembly has already been dissolved.
The apex court said that the Election Commission will now take over and refused to ask the poll panel to fix election schedule at the earliest.
Polls were necessitated as any of the three parties - AAP, BJP and Congress refused to form the government in the national capital. Both AAP and Congress were insisting on fresh polls for the 70-member Assembly.
President Pranab Mukjherjee had approved Lieutenant Governor Dr Najeeb Jung's plan to invite the single largest party, BJP, to form the government but failed to bring the party to the table.
The BJP with 29 MLAs was the single largest party but was short of seven seats to claim majority.
Polls are likely to be held by February 2015.
Delhi has been under the President's Rule since February after the Arvind Kejriwal government quit on the issue of Jan Lokpal Bill.
