New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday served a notice to the Centre seeking its response on a PIL demanding fast-track trial of rape cases and implementation of existing laws for safety of women.

The PIL also asked for MLAs or MPs chargesheeted with crimes against women to be suspended. The SC, however, said, "We cannot do this. This is something which the lawmakers have to decide." According to a report, there are two MPs and a total of 42 MLAs who face charges of crimes against women including rape.

In the aftermath of the brutal Delhi gangrape incident, there has been huge public outcry against political parties giving tickets to tainted men, especially those who have rape charges against them.

On Thursday, the ruling Congress expelled a local party leader in the Bodoland area of Assam who had been accused of raping a mother of two.

Earlier, the Trinamool Congress suspended its partymen who had been caught on video heckling and throwing money at women dancers at their foundation day party.
