Legislature Party met on Wednesday to formally elect its new leader.

New Delhi: Sheila Dikshit has been elected as the Congress Legislature Party leader in Delhi.

The Legislature Party met on Wednesday to formally elect its new leader.

Dikshit is credited for the thumping victory of Congress for the third consecutive time and the meeting was considered a mere formality.

The meeting was attended by all the 42 Congress Members of Legislative Assembly which was held at the office of Delhi Congress Pradesh Committee.

The meeting was chaired by Congress General Secretary Mohsina Kidwai and Union Minister of State for Finance PK Bansal.

According to the party insiders the incumbent Chief Minister is expected to have a firm grip over the Cabinet and Dikshit is expected to give ministerial berth to her loyalists.

Congress retained power in Delhi Assembly winnings 42 seats while Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to bag only 23 of 69 seats at stake. Other parties and independents won four seats.

Elections were held for 69 seats out of the 70 as polling in the Rajinder Nagar Assembly constituency in central Delhi was countermanded following the death of sitting BJP MLA and candidate Puran Chand Yogi.
