New Delhi: The Congress party on Monday will sit for a crucial meeting chaired by the party President Sonia Gandhi to explore the possibility of a strategic alliance with the Left ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections.
Sources said, the meeting was called after the state party unit requested Sonia to go ahead with the Left to contest the state poll.
However, party insider said that Congress party is divided over the issue and may avoid an open alliance with the Left considering the bitter experience in Kerala. In Kerala both the parties are fighting against each other over a series of Scams faced by the UDF government.
Congress leaders, who are in charge of West Bengal, already submitted a report on the political equations to the party high command. They also expressed their wiliness to have an alliance with the Left to counter Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s strong presence in the state.
In today's meeting state Congress leaders will meet Sonia and party vice president Rahul Gandhi where final call over the alliance will be decided.
Congress leaders in Bengal are wary of TMC after having a bad alliance experience in the last elections. But the central leadership is worried that going with the Left will burn all bridges with Mamata.
According to West Bengal Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, workers of both the Congress and the Left parties want an alliance and look at it as the "only way to defeat" the ruling party.
"Congress and left workers irrespective of the opinion of their own party leaders are of the view that forging an alliance is the only way to defeat the ruling Trinamool Congress government," Chowdhury had said.
He added, "If the Congress and Left unite together, then the political scenario will undergo a drastic change."
