Chennai: About Rs 15 crore of unaccounted cash has been seized by the Income Tax department in different places in the run up to the April 13 assembly polls in Tamil Nadu, a top Electoral official said on Saturday.

"About Rs 15 crore of unaccounted cash has been seized overall in Madurai alone, we have seized about Rs 3.5 crore of unaccounted cash", Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar told reporters here.

He said the cash was seized by the flying squad of Income Tax (Investigation) department, adding those carrying more than Rs two lakh in cash should have necessary documents.

He said the IT sleuths have also seized Rs 50 lakh from the house of a real estate developer in Tiruppur district.

"After the model code of conduct came into force, about Rs 15 crore of unaccounted money has been seized so far," he said.

To monitor flow of funds, the IT Department has appointed 70 teams, comprising personnel from its investigation wing along with the local police to maintain strict vigil in the districts.

He said surveillance cameras have been set up in all 10,000 poll booths in the State
