Sitapur: Violence broke out on Wednesday night outside an independent candidate's house in Sitapur area of Uttar Pradesh, after alleged Samajwadi Party workers tried to set his and 13 other houses on fire. Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident. They are allegedly supporters of SP MLA Jeena Babu.
Reports claim that the men also opened fire on supporters of the independent candidate.
Nearly 4 people were injured in the violence. They are currently recuperating in hospital.
The violence came despite party youth leader Akhilesh Yadav issuing strict instructions against resorting to violence during celebrations.
On Tuesday, while the SP celebrated a landslide victory in the UP polls, a 7-year-old child died in celebratory gunfire. His family is in a state of shock.
Just hours after a historic UP polls verdict, history unfolded yet again.
The pictures of stone pelting at journalists, allegedly by SP workers in Jhansi, a child dying after celebratory fire was opened by a SP MLA, remained indicative of the biggest challenge ahead for Akhilesh Yadav in maintaining law and order.
Akhilesh promised strict action against party workers who went on a rampage as celebrations went out of hand.
"I will take action against those who were involved in the violence," he said.
But that may be easier said than done, there is still a question mark on whether Akhilesh is really the leader in charge of SP. SP Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav showed he knew how to deal with his own brothers and extended family members. However, the question remains - What about Akhilesh?
"Akhilesh has done well, his hard work has finally paid off. We won because of him," Mulayam said.
For a leader who didn't shy away from speaking his mind out while cycling, mandate 2012 is an opportunity to take the next step, a step which could completely rewrite the political destiny of Uttar Pradesh.
