New Delhi: Escaping a version 9, Microsoft is all geared up to launch today the next version of its ubiquitous operating system, called Windows 10. The highly anticipated OS was first announced last year and after months of fine tuning, the awaited software is finally here.
To be unveiled in 13 cities around the world as a way of tribute to all those who participated in the review of the software, Windows 10 will be made available in 190 countries as a free upgrade to those who run a genuine predecessor OS.
One of the reasons why Windows 10 is being touted as a mega launch for the software giant is because its previous Windows 8 had a bumpy launch and consumers had a hard time adjusting to the tablet-friendly interface on their mouse and keyboard attached computers. So, Microsoft has brought in major changes to the new OS that is aimed to power not only portable devices but also revive the lost interest of computer users, many of which have still not upgraded to the tile-mode of Windows 8.
Here’s how you can easily make the switch from a previous Windows OS to the new Windows 10 on your PCs and tablets:
1. Those running genuine versions of the Windows software (Windows 8.1, Windows 7 SP1) can reserve their free upgrade in the Get Windows 10 App. All you need to do is click on the small Window icon located at the right-hand end of the taskbar to get started. Click on the ‘reserve your free upgrade’ in the app window. Enter your email to get a confirmation of the reservation. You will be notified when the update is available. You could also cancel the reservation if you wish to do so.
2. Even if you do not register for the update, your Windows 10 update will still be free. However, registering is the first step. To avail the free offer, you must upgrade to Windows 10 within one year of availability. Once you upgrade, you have Windows 10 for free on that device.
3. In case you are running the counterfeit version of Windows on your devices, you will be required to shell up to $199 for the authentic Windows 10 version. Earlier Microsoft had announced that it will offer free upgrade to everyone, however, it later announced that it will keep the status of fake Windows as non-genuine and unsupported.
4. For those planning to get a different version of the Windows 10 software, charges may vary. It is expected that the Windows 10 Home edition will cost around $119.99, while the Windows 10 Pro will be priced at $199.99.
5. There are a lot of features which are available in selective markets and are device specific. For example, Cortana is only currently available on Windows 10 for the United States, United Kingdom, China, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain; to use touch based recognition, you need a tablet or monitor that supports the function.
