Google Is Ready To Bring Windows Apps To Chromebooks: Here's How

Google has completed its acquisition of Cameyo, a software virtualization company it previously partnered with in 2023, for an undisclosed amount. The Virtual App Delivery (VAD) will simplify the use of Windows apps on ChromeOS devices.

Google plans to use the expertise of the company led by Andrew Miller to enhance the experience of virtual applications for its users. While the two companies have collaborated in the past, Google's ownership is expected to improve Sundar Pichai's company's ability to provide a smoother experience for virtual applications and make Chromebooks more attractive options for businesses who still rely on older applications.

As per the official blog, “ChromeOS has long been committed to providing users with the best possible experience for virtual applications. Recognising the potential of VAD, we partnered with Cameyo last year to launch a seamless virtual application delivery experience fully integrated with ChromeOS—with local file system integration, ability to deliver virtual apps as progressive web apps (PWAs) and enhanced clipboard support.

These features ensure users can seamlessly access data and files in a secure, easy, and familiar way within virtual apps.”

Speaking about acquisition, Cameyo co-founder and CMO Robb Henshaw told The Verge, “This will lead to even deeper integration of these virtualized apps into ChromeOS. Further integrations will improve not only the end user experience, but also make it even simpler for IT admins to deploy and push those apps out to their users.”

Reportedly, Cameyo uses VAD technology rather than traditional VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure). This will enable virtual apps to operate on ChromeOS without the requirement of complex installation procedures. This means, IT teams can now “keep software up-to-date and secure, all while improving the end-user experience by making all apps accessible without needing to sign in to a separate virtual desktop environment first.”

According to Google, a recent Forrester study commissioned by the company reveals that 90% of individuals with IT backgrounds predict a future where applications are cloud-based rather than installed on desktops. 78% of respondents believe that companies not adopting web-based applications will fall behind. Adopting web-based applications can now provide major benefits over competitors, including better security, lower costs and enhanced user experiences.
