Among upcoming video game releases for the week of April 26, "Hitman: Sapienza" takes players to a beautifully recreated pocket of Italy, avian soldier silliness returns in side-on action game "Rocketbirds 2," there's cutthroat and co-operative economic sci-fi simulation with "Offworld Trading Company," and another figuring collectathon through "Mini Mario & Friends: Amiibo Challenge."
Hitman: Sapienza
Available: from April 26
For: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows PC
A second environment to explore as owners of the latest "Hitman" game migrate from Parisian halls to a digital Italy via the sunny coastal town of Sapienza. It's a free update for owners of "Hitman: Full Experience," the first of a planned six episode schedule, also available via an upgrade package for owners of the cut-down Intro edition.
Rocketbirds 2: Evolution
Available: April 26
For: PS4, PlayStation Vita
Take control of fowl commando Hardboiled Chicken in a second stab at ridding the world of the Penguin Army leader, Il Putzki -- except this time the evil dictator is backed up by Transdimensional Space Owls. As well as the solo campaign, there's a procedurally generated co-op mode and a multiplayer dojo. Developed by Singapore's Ratloop Asia; 2010's "Rocketbirds: Revolution!" received three IGF Award nominations.
Mini Mario & Friends: Amiibo Challenge
Available: April 28
For: Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Wii U
A seventh entry to the "Mario vs. Donkey Kong" route-finding puzzle series and one that drops the big monkey's branding entirely, in favor of Nintendo's hit peripheral, Amiibo figurines. Available since March 25 with Amiibos, which can be used to unlock new characters, or separately from April 28.
Offworld Trading Company
Available: April 28
For: Mac, WinPC
Its design team boasting Soren Johnson of "Civilization IV" fame, the sci-fi setting of "Offworld Trading Company" serves as backdrop not for cultural or geographic expansion but economic dominance -- or perfect co-operation -- as players see fit. Releasing after a year of well-received incubation via Steam's Early Access program.
Battleborn
Available: May 3
For: PS4, XBO, WinPC
Thanks to its overwhelming visual similarities, it's clear that this is the next outing for the studio behind the "Borderlands" franchise. But instead of an off-kilter shooter, this is an off-kilter shooter that sets out to adapt the push-pull format of lucractive team-based eSports games "Dota 2" and "League of Legends."
