Valve Plans To Bring SteamOS To Rival Windows-Powered Gaming Handheld Devices: Know More
Valve has its own handheld device for the gaming segment but offering SteamOS for third-party brands could put it in competition with Windows.

Valve has said that it is working to enable SteamOS on portable systems from other companies including ASUS ROG Ally devices. Valve revealed in a community post explaining changes in the latest beta version of SteamOS that it now supports “extra ROG Ally keys.

The company also announced its intention to allow other companies to use SteamOS on their devices.

“The note about ROG Ally keys is related to third-party device support for SteamOS. The team is continuing to work on adding support for additional handhelds on SteamOS,” said Valve designer Lawrence Yang as quoted by The Verge.

Valve’s Steam Deck gaming console runs SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system. Other handhelds, such as the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation Portal, employ proprietary operating systems, while the majority of the handheld gaming consoles run on Microsoft Windows. This includes the ASUS ROG Ally, MSI Claw, ROG Ally X, and Lenovo Legion Go.

Meanwhile, Valve has confirmed that it will allow third-party handhelds to run SteamOS, posing a challenge to Microsoft, which has yet to optimise the Windows platform for the expanding handheld gaming console category

The delay at Microsoft’s end has led to OEMs like ASUS and Lenovo creating their proprietary layers on top of the Windows platform to make the user interface more suitable for mobile devices.

SteamOS, on the other hand, was created with mobile gaming devices in mind. Valve was one of the first companies to develop current-generation portable gaming devices, allowing it to fine-tune SteamOS for this form factor.

There are reports that Microsoft is developing an Xbox portable game system, although it is unlikely that Windows would be installed on this device.

Microsoft may choose to follow Sony’s lead and make the upcoming Xbox portable a remote-play device that can be used in conjunction with conventional game consoles, or it may have its UI akin to SteamOS.
