New Delhi: Targeting the budget-conscious consumers, Chinese mobile manufacturer Xiaomi came up with an affordable device at the ongoing Mobile World Congress; this time it is a personal camera.
To take on the GoPro camera, Xiaomi launched its Yi Action Camera, which is a compact action-travel camera made for the non-sedentary photographers.
A Cnet report stated that like the entry-level GoPro Hero, Xiaomi's camera sports comparatively powerful photo and video capabilities, despite its compact size and is priced at about $65 which is half the GoPro Hero's retail price of $130.
The Xiaomi Yi Action Camera not just beats the GoPro in terms of price, but also includes similar specs like in-built WiFi for file transfers and remote control through common apps. The two personal cameras also feature similar battery capacity, identical waterproof depth, and the handy option of bracket-mounting the device on your chosen helmet, pet harness, or vehicle.
However, one key difference between the two is that the Yi Action Camera offers better video quality. While the GoPro Hero shoots at a 5-megapixel resolution and records 1080p video at 30fps or 720p video at 30fps, the Yi Action Camera is powered by an Ambarella A7LS image processor paired with Sony's back-illuminated Exmor R BSI CMOS image sensor, which enables it to shoot photos at 16-megapixel and record 1080p video at 60fps.
The Yi Action Camera is also lighter at 72g as compared to the GoPro Hero that weighs 111g and offers 64GB of storage-twice to that of GoPro Hero.
Other difference include a wider viewing angle of 170 degrees in GoPro Hero which the Yi Action Camera slightly lacks with its 155-degree angle. Also, the GoPro Hero comes with a host of accessories and transparent plastic camera case, which the Yi Action Camera doesn't offer. However, the $80 variant of the Yi Action Camera includes a proprietary selfie stick, along with a choice of white- or olive-coloured camera body.
Like its smartphones, the Xiaomi Yi Action Camera is currently available only in the Chinese market or via Xiaomi's flash sales through its online Mi store.
