Two Australian tourists were extremely surprised when they discovered they had paid a staggering $100 (Rs 8,342) for two burgers, fries and a single soda during their stay at a hotel in Europe.
“We believed there was a mistake,” Maria Antoniou informed news.com.au. Maria and her partner Anthony were staying in Grindelwald, a picturesque village situated in Switzerland’s Bernese Alps.
Switzerland is known for being one of the most expensive countries in the world. Despite this, it’s a popular destination for travellers because of its stunning scenery.
The couple had expected Switzerland to be pricey from their research. But Maria said seeing the high prices in person was even more surprising. She shared that the duo didn’t shop much in Switzerland. However, she highlighted that the food prices were very high. Maria mentioned that if she were in Australia and was told that two burgers cost $150 (Rs 12,513), she would have left. She also explained that the expensive prices weren’t only at their hotel.
Maria noted that street food prices were comparable, except when buying from grocery stores, which many people opted for. During their trip, Maria and Anthony found Grindelwald, Switzerland, to be the most costly destination they visited. They also observed that Santorini, Greece, ranked as the second most expensive place they travelled to.
The couple, who have authored several travel guides for fellow Australians, shared that despite the expensive food, Switzerland should still be on everyone’s travel list. Maria said, “Switzerland is one of the most stunning countries we’ve ever been to. No picture or video can truly show how beautiful it is. My partner and I can’t wait to go back. Just make sure you save enough money before you go.”
When Maria posted about her experience on her TikTok account (@mariaantoniouu21), other Australians were surprised by the high food prices in Switzerland. “One person who visited Interlaken, a famous Swiss resort town, said, ‘We bought three large meals from Burger King, and it cost us 210 Australian dollars.” Another traveller on a tight budget revealed, “I paid $15 (Rs 1,251) for a cup of noodles from my hostel’s gift shop”.
