A woman’s adventure took a dangerous turn recently when a normal photo opportunity suddenly turned into something dramatic and life-threatening. Twenty-three-year-old Matilda Campbell dropped her phone while taking pictures and ended up upside down in a small nook between two big boulders.
On October 21, the New South Wales Ambulance Service posted on Instagram about her unusual predicament, saying she was literally “between a rock and a hard place." She was free from the approximately three-meter (10-foot) crevice after a challenging operation that took seven hours in all.

Following the incident, Matilda Campbell posted a funny picture of her soles caught between the boulders on Facebook, which was taken during her rescue.
She cheekily commented, “Not my feet on display like that," and included a laughing emoji with the photo. “No more rock exploration for me for a while," she wrote in another post, jokingly reflecting on her tendency towards mishaps.
Specialist rescue paramedic Peter Watts, who was involved in the rescue operation, said that in his ten years of work, he had never seen something like this, as per reports. He talked about how the rescue effort was both satisfying and difficult. According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, after their attempts to free Campbell failed, her friends had to hike to a place with a better phone connection to notify emergency responders.
“We all worked incredibly well together to achieve a good outcome for the patient," Watts said, praising the interdisciplinary team for their cooperative effort. To make a safe entry point, rescuers carefully removed many huge stones and built a wooden structure to provide support throughout the operation.
The tricky task of guiding Campbell through a tight “S" bend took more than an hour after rescuers were able to access her feet. In addition, a huge boulder weighing 500 kilogrammes (1,100 pounds) had to be moved out of the path using a specialised winch.
Throughout the ordeal, Campbell maintained her composure and cooperation despite her vulnerable situation. “She was able to help us get her out by doing anything we asked her to do," Watts added. Fortunately, she was rescued with only minor bruises and scratches, but her phone was regrettably left in the crevice.
