A Mumbai couple is facing criticism after organising a Haldi ceremony inspired by Spain’s famous La Tomatina festival, where guests crushed tomatoes under their feet in a food fight. The event, dubbed Tomatina Haldi, took place earlier this month and has sparked outrage on social media.
The controversial Instagram Reel, which has since been taken down, showed guests jumping on tomatoes in a large pit, mimicking the iconic tomato-throwing festival. The couple’s Instagram account, where the video was originally posted, is still accessible to the public, where other videos from the ceremony have also received similar backlash.
Screenshots of the video made their way to Reddit, where users criticised the couple for wasting food. Some argued that the La Tomatina festival uses overripe tomatoes that would otherwise not be consumed, whereas the tomatoes used in the ceremony were perfectly edible.

The couple has not yet issued a response to the backlash. However, the incident has sparked a conversation about food wastage and cultural appropriation, with many calling for greater sensitivity and awareness when organising such events.
On the other hand, another wedding video sparked public outrage. Footage from a wedding in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, captured a family publicly announcing the gifts presented to the groom’s family, leading to widespread criticism online.
