A unique ‘Ghost Marriage’ was organised for a Malaysian couple who died in a tragic car crash. The couple had been dating for over three years and planned to get married soon. However, things took a tragic turn after they died in a car accident. To fulfil their last wish, the families of the couple decided to conduct a ‘ghost marriage’ to celebrate their love for each other. Their families wanted them to unite in their afterlife.
According to a report by the South China Morning Post, Yang Jingshan and Lee Xueying had been dating for more than three years and had plans to get married. Yang Jingshan planned to celebrate his birthday in Bangkok on June 2, 2024. This birthday was also extra special as he planned to propose marriage to his girlfriend during the trip. However, things took a turn when, on May 24, the couple’s car overturned on a road in Perak, in northwestern Malaysia, and neither survived.
The couple’s sudden death was heartbreaking for their families but they decided to celebrate their love with a ‘ghost marriage’, the report added. The unique marriage was organised at the funeral hall. A picture of the couple together was also taken by the families.
Jingshan’s family listed Lee as their daughter-in-law in the obituary. In ancient Chinese tradition, it is believed that if someone dies without fulfilling their last wish, they might not find peace in their afterlife and will return to haunt the living. Ghost marriage refers to a ritual that unites two unmarried dead spirits.
A popular Chinese folklore expert, Huang Jingchun, told digital media outlet The Paper, “Influenced by Chinese culture, ghost marriages also exist in many East Asian countries, such as North Korea and Japan.” He added that these marriages help meet the emotional needs of relatives who have lost their loved ones. Even though ghost marriages have been banned in China, it is still being practised.
