Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in July 1994, initially operating the company from his garage in Bellevue, Washington. The door desks, according to Amazon’s website, originated in the summer of 1995 when Bezos and a few employees needed desks. Nico Lovejoy, Amazon’s fifth employee and a friend of Bezos, recalled the practical decision-making process in an interview with Fox Business.

According to Lovejoy, they found themselves conveniently situated across the street from a Home Depot. Bezos examined desks available for purchase and also considered doors, which proved to be significantly more affordable. Consequently, he opted to purchase a door and improvised by adding legs to create a makeshift desk. At that time, the entire e-commerce platform of Amazon operated on servers named Bert and Ernie, situated on door desks that were, in Lovejoy’s words, “pretty wobbly.”

Reflecting on the past, Lovejoy humourously added, “I went out and replaced the hardware on the desks Bezos built. You would never want to hire Jeff Bezos as a carpenter. He’s much better at other things. I think he’d tell you the same thing.”
