Mankind Pharma Donated Rs 250 Crore To COVID-19 Relief After A Miscalculation Of Zero
The decision to contribute to various funds, provide oxygen cylinders, and support the Prime Minister’s relief efforts was rooted in an emotional connection to the plight of frontline workers.

In a candid conversation with YouTuber Ranveer Allahabadia on The Ranveer Show, Rajeev Juneja, the Managing Director of Mankind Pharma, shared a tale of philanthropy spurred by a miscalculation. The pharmaceutical giant, known for its commitment to social causes, inadvertently ended up donating Rs 250 crore instead of the initially planned Rs 21 crore towards COVID-19 relief efforts for frontline workers.

Juneja began by revealing the internal family debate that led to this substantial contribution. Initially contemplating a donation of Rs 21 crore, his son’s perspective, coupled with news of Akshay Kumar’s Rs 50 crore donation, prompted a reassessment of their philanthropic commitment. “We had a debate at home. We felt that we have a lot, and we should definitely give. We thought of donating Rs 21 crore. But my son said, you have such a big business, you should donate more. At the same, it was reported that Akshay Kumar donated Rs 50 crore. My son came to me and pressed upon the topic again. And we immediately went ahead with it,” he said. Moved by a desire to make a more significant impact, the family decided to increase their donation substantially.

Contrary to the age-old adage of keeping charitable actions discreet, Juneja expressed the belief that making such contributions known could inspire others. The decision to contribute to various funds, provide oxygen cylinders, and support the Prime Minister’s relief efforts was rooted in an emotional connection to the plight of frontline workers.

However, a miscalculation in the estimated donation amount led Mankind Pharma to contribute ten times more than initially planned, resulting in a staggering Rs 250 crore donation. Juneja emphasised that this unintended generosity was met with unexpected love and appreciation, turning a mistake into a remarkable act of kindness.

“It happened just like that. Something big happened out of a mistake,” he told the host.

Reflecting on the broader landscape of philanthropy, Juneja drew parallels with global figures like Bill Gates. He highlighted the transformative impact that public awareness of charitable deeds can have on an individual’s legacy. Distinguishing between being merely a business tycoon and a compassionate superhuman being, he stressed the importance of giving back to society.

Juneja further underlined the role of empathy and compassion in the success of a businessman. He shared Mankind Pharma’s commitment to its employees, citing the provision of 13 years’ worth of salary to the families of those who succumbed to the pandemic. This commitment, he asserted, was a manifestation of the company’s belief in actively participating in alleviating the struggles faced by its extended family of employees.
