Mexican cartels are reportedly charging a new criminal tax from people who have trees in their gardens. Los Ciclones and Los Metros, divisions of the Gulf Cartel, charge families a fee for each tree that shades a house in Tamaulipas. According to Milenio’s–News website of Mexico, the extortion fee was first implemented in March.
It is now believed that having a cool breeze due to trees and gardens at home is now a privilege which can be reportedly enjoyed at the cost of ‘Shadow Tax’. As per the Daily Star report, the residents living in the region of Valle Hermososo and Rio Bravo contacted the news outlet to reveal the new tax which is being imposed by Mexican Cartels.
Graciela, whose name has been changed, called the extortion ‘the shadow right’ before telling the exact date of its implementation. “I’m clear about when this happened because it was the day after my husband’s birthday: March 27,” said Graciela while talking to Milenio reporters. She added that some people arrived at her home and said that they were from ‘La Empresa’ (Los Ciclones).
“They told us that from now on they were going to charge for the trees in the house. They forced their way in and told me that a fee would be charged for four trees, including a small tree that provided shade to the dog when it lay down on the ground,” Graciela claimed.
Graciela, 62, said she would have to cut down the trees of her house if she didn’t pay, but neither she nor her 70-year-old husband had the strength to do so. As per her statement, if they are not able to pay the required extortion fee then they will have to hire a person from the cartel to chop four trees in the garden. The price per tree is reportedly 100 pesos (Rs 520) per month.
Graciela’s husband Ignacio said that these cartels have no mercy on the senior citizens. The other neighbours also allegedly pay the cartel for the basic services and amenities like cars, repairing of the house, animals etc. “If you don’t pay, then they kill you” Ignacio added.
