The 1947 partition that split the Indian subcontinent into two separate nations, India and Pakistan, is marked as one of the most massive mass migrations in the history of mankind. Many families left their treasures behind before packing up their necessary items and starting the journey to India or West or East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), believing they would return home soon. Fast forward to today, a vlogger shared a video of a man from Lahore who had the chance to retrieve a piece of his home that he left in India.

The vlogger documents the reunion of Amin Chohan, the former principal of Aitchison College’s Junior School in Pakistan, with a treasured relic from his childhood. His friend Palwinder Singh had sent him a door from India. With a flood of emotions, Chohan looks at the door. The simple item encapsulates a depth of connection that brings tears streaming down his face.

In the footage, a visibly distraught Chohan can be seen kissing the door and staring at it. He gently sets the door in his home after unwrapping it. The vlogger explains in the caption that the antique door came from Prof’s father’s house in Ghoman Pind, Batala. This door, which has journeyed a great distance from Batala to Mumbai, Dubai, Karachi, and ultimately Lahore, where Amin resides and is full of memories.

“Even though the partition of 1947 divided lands, it couldn’t separate the hearts of Punjabis, who stayed connected through shared heritage and friendships,” the caption further read.

The video, which was shared on Instagram, garnered over 2 million views.

People in the comments sections were moved by this emotional gesture.

A user wrote, “What a lovely precious gift and a great deal of effort.”

Another commented, “Such emotions send shivers down the spine. Cannot even begin to fathom what they went through during partition. Hope this continues to remind him of beautiful memories.”

“In this world of negativity all around me, I need these videos and people who are making it happen”, said another.
