March 30 marks a special occasion for food enthusiasts worldwide as it is celebrated as World Idli Day. For nearly a decade, this day has been dedicated to honouring the simple yet beloved idli, a breakfast item enjoyed by many. Paired with tasty sambar and a variety of chutneys, idli holds a special place in our hearts and stomachs. While the traditional idli preparation is the most charming experience, a street food vendor has recently added a unique twist to this classic dish. Nowadays, we often come across innovative and bizarre recipes and one such creation getting online attention is the Burger Idli from Avantika Chennai Cafe in Mumbai.
In the video clip, the vendor begins by slicing large sized idli in half. He then proceeds to enhance the flavour by adding a mix of spices, including schezwan sauce, mayonnaise and green chutney. For the filling, he layers the Burger Idli with onions, tomatoes, capsicum, grated cheese, carrots and beet, along with a secret masala. Moving forward, he added green chutney, coconut chutney and mayonnaise. Finally, he presents the burger idli on a plate, accompanied by a bowl of piping hot sambar, along with coconut, tomato and green chutney.

The video showing the preparation of the Burger Idli has gone viral and garnered over 40,000 views. However, social media users aren’t impressed, as many are criticising the vendor for transforming a wholesome dish into an unhealthy food item.
Reacting to the clip a user wrote, “Maggi and eggs ke baad ab Idli ka turn aaya hai satyanaash hone ka. (After Maggi and eggs, now it’s the turn for Idli destruction).” Another shared, “Idli is supposed to be a healthy breakfast. Fermented, steamed. What is this person doing.”
An individual added, “If you want a burger just eat burger why make dog out of a cat, killing traditions. Another suggestion is just fry those damn idlis man.” “Merko kabhi nahi khana ye, baksh do idli ko toh. (I never want to eat this, leave the idli alone),” a comment read.
A person shared, “Curious…How can one dip those 3 chutneys on that side.” Another wrote, “Unhealthy ticket to hospitals.” One more added, “Death warrant.”
Earlier, a vlogger shared a video showing a food joint in Lajpat Nagar, South Delhi who turned Idli into an Ice Cream. Yes, you heard it correctly. In the video, the vendor is known for transforming the beloved idlis into an icy dessert. However, since the video made its way into the internet, it has left social media users disappointed.
Since the video was shared on Instagram, it has gone viral and garnered over 3 million views.
