From funky outfits to unexpected furry companions, rideshare drivers are full of surprises. But passengers can be equally surprising, as Reddit user smkAce0921 discovered. In a post on the ‘Malicious Compliance’ forum, he shared that a few years ago, while he was Ubering, people began using a tactic to avoid paying a big part of the ride fare. Not backing down, the Redditor decided to take action against this fraud practice.
The individual used to drive an Uber cab in California, US. Some years back, while driving a cab in San Diego, he received a ride request. It was booked by a girl who seemed like a college student. However, a few minutes after she got in the cab, the ride was cancelled midway.
This had happened to the cab driver before. So, he was aware that some people tried to travel for free by cancelling the ride midway to save money. But he didn’t want to be tricked again. So, after the cancellation, he pulled over and asked the girl to exit the cab. The girl claimed it was a mistake and wanted to continue the ride. The driver insisted on her rebooking the cab, but she refused. She also refused to leave the cab.

In this situation, the driver came up with an idea. The driver recounted in his post that he began driving towards the American border, informing the girl that he intended to leave the country and that she could accompany him if she wished. At first, the girl thought he was joking. However, as they neared the border, she became frightened. The driver had his passport and could easily cross, but the girl did not. Eventually, she chose to leave the cab and disembarked. The driver had to pay double the fare to reach his destination from that spot. He considered this a lesson taught to the girl.
The cab driver received praise on social media for teaching the girl a lesson without resorting to any fight or misbehaviour. However, some individuals expressed concerns, feeling as though the driver might have intended to kidnap the girl. Yet, the driver clarified in his post that his intention was solely to impart a lesson and not to kidnap her.
