A landlord in Wildwood, New Jersey, US, felt being the luckiest person on the planet after finding a buried treasure from the 1930s in the courtyard of his house. Richard Gilson, the landowner of the house initially thought of it as roots before discovering a $10 and $20 bill dating back to 1934 as per the inscription on the notes.
The bills add up to $1,000, which if estimated in 1934 was worth nearly $20,000 (Rs 16.58 lakh) in today’s money. The discovery garnered the headlines two years ago but has now again resurfaced on the internet following several trending treasure tales in recent times.
In this excavation, Gilson found a box. It is being said that this box is from the 1930s. “Somebody went under there with a little shovel and buried that thing under there. “They were hiding that money from somebody for something,” Richard Gilson said as quoted by CBS News.
As per reports, it is expected that someone hid their money in the ground during the severe economic recession in the world in the 1930s. Gilson believes that either somebody during the Depression closed their bank account and hid their money in the ground as they didn’t trust the financial institutions at that time or somebody stole it and hid it in his courtyard. Contrary to the next course of action, i.e. digging more, he decided to stop the excavation and said that the treasure he received was priceless.
“I think the story is priceless. I don’t know that I’m ever going to see financial gain but I do believe that the story is priceless,” said Gilson.
The reports added that the local treasure tales have been passed down generations but none have been proved yet until this event. Now that the treasure has been found, people are speculating that there will be more treasures underground. Regarding this, a man said that this is an island and who knows what kind of treasure is hidden around here.
