Watch: How Indian Railways Made Side Lower Berth Extra Comfortable

Travelling by train is an altogether different experience and especially one secures the lower berth, which allows the passenger to capture the changing landscapes. But, the best way to experience travel is by sitting with back support in the side lower berth and enjoying the train journey. But, if you may have noticed, the two back supports when closed form one whole berth for a passenger to lie down. And the gap between them often creates discomfort. Now, to tackle this situation, the Railways has come up with a unique solution which has gone viral on the internet.

The solution to fix the side lower berths has been provided by the Railways. Right next to the side lower seats, a long and thin-like mattress is kept, which needs to be taken out and placed on the two lower seats to form one berth. This is a lot more comfortable and adds extra cushioning which helps support the back as well. The journey will be more comfortable without the gap in the seat causing any kind of problems for the passenger while sleeping.

The video shows a man removing the sheets and showing the audience where the mattress-like thing is kept adjacent to the side lower berths. A handle is also kept to help take it out. The caption read, “Side lower berth in the train.” The comment section was quite surprising and many shared that they had not seen it. A user commented, “Nahi milta bhai South k train mein (This is not available in the trains going to South).” Another user wrote, “I never seen such for side lower berth! Today I had a side lower berth as RAC but nothing was there! To whom should this be complained?” One user wrote, “Majority of travelers are unaware. Thanks for exhibiting the hidden facility. Good day.”

In 2020, Piyush Goyal shared a video on X (formerly known as Twitter) of making the lower seat berths of the second AC bogie comfortable. He tweeted about it and wrote, “Indian Railways is striving for convenient travel of the passengers, an example of this is some changes made in the seats, which made the journey of the passengers more comfortable.”

The video shows a railway official displaying the working of the new design. He said that the additional folding has been added to the side lower berths which connects the two seats and solves the issue of the gap problem.
