The director of Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in the US has said that all the gains made against Covid-19 will be lost by country against new variant of the virus that is emerging. CDC chief Rochelle Walensky said that average death rate has increased due to the new variant, a report in Hindustan Times.
Walensky asked the people to stay strong and continue wearing face masks, follow other protocols needed to prevent themselves from the disease and also expressed concern about the relaxations being offered in some states. “We stand to completely lose the hard-earned ground we have gained,” she reportedly said.
The variant is spreading fast in the US where New York has emerged as the cities with highest cases in November. The federal health officials said that so far, 735 cases of the new variant have been identified, including 585 in the last two weeks.
The mutation has spread across metropolitan New York region, and cases have been found in 14 other states including Texas, Wyoming and Maryland, Gregory Armstrong, director of the CDC’s Advanced Molecular Detection Programme reportedly said.
Anthony Fauci, the top medical adviser to Joe Biden, told on Monday that the variant is known scientifically as B.1.526 and it started off in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan.
New York had the highest number of new cases per 100,000 residents last week, followed by New Jersey and South Carolina, said Reuters.
29 out of 50 states in the US have reported more infections last week compared to the previous week, Reuters reported.
