The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have been holding discussions in efforts to form a coalition government in the aftermath of the February 8 national elections in which no party could secure a simple majority. Sources told CNN-News18 that the PPP holds the “trump card” which will decide Pakistan’s future.

A slew of meetings is expected in Islamabad on Monday, said sources. The PPP will hold its Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting at 7pm to deliberate on the PML-N’s offers, they added.

The PML-N leadership will also hold meetings this evening in Islamabad with the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, Pakistan Muslim League (Q), and Muttahida Qaumi Movement, said the sources.

Independent candidates backed by jailed former prime minister Imran Khan are leading in the poll results, followed by the PML-N and PPP.

February 13 is the last day for independent legislators to join any party.

“As part of a formula being discussed, PML-N’s Shehbaz Sharif could become the Prime Minister while PPP may get Presidency, Balochistan, and may be Speaker of national assembly,” said a source.

According to sources, PPP president Asif Ali Zardari will push for his sister Faryal Talpur to be made Pakistan’s first woman President as his equations with army chief Syed Asim Munir are precarious.

PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is also expected to hold a press conference around 9pm (Pakistan time), sources added.
