New Delhi: A Saudi Arabian diplomat, who is accused in an alleged rape case, left India on Wednesday. Police sources called it a huge blow to investigations and said they will pursue the case through diplomatic channels.
The government sources said that it was impossible to stop the diplomat Majed Hassan Ashoor from leaving the country as he enjoyed diplomatic immunity and the government could not do much in this case. Ashoor has been accused by two Nepalese women of raping them.
Ashoor took Gulf Air flight No. 135 from Delhi to Bahrain. The flight left from Delhi at 9:50 PM and reached Bahrain at 11:30 PM.
"We have learnt that the first secretary Majed Hassan Ashoor who was allegedly accused of raping two Nepalese women has left India," spokesperson in External Affairs Ministry Vikas Swarup said.
"The first secretary being a diplomat is governed by the provision of the Vienna convention on diplomatic relations," Swarup added.
Deep Upadhayay, Nepal ambassador to India, said, "This is a very sensitive crime and victims should get justice. The Nepal government is very serious about this case. If there is a crime, then criminal should be punished. If police needs support for investigation, then victim will come down to India,"
Earlier, Saudi Arabian Ambassador Saud Mohammed Alsati was called to the Ministry of External Affairs and told that the accused diplomat should give a statement to Gurgaon Police probing the case.
The Saudi envoy was called a day after MEA had received the report about the case from Gurgaon Police including the second medical report confirming rape and sodomy.
The two Nepalese women, who have been rescued, have alleged that they were confined and raped by the diplomat and his "guests" repeatedly in a flat in Gurgaon on the outskirts of the national capital after which the local police filed an FIR in the matter.
