UK’s Prince Harry on Wednesday lost his legal challenge against the British government’s decision to take away his police protection when he is in Britain.
King Charles’ younger son Harry had brought the action against the government at the High Court in London after the UK Home Office decided in February 2020 that he would cease to automatically receive personal police security while in Britain, BBC reported.
The Duke of Sussex sought to challenge a decision to downgrade his security status after stepping back from his role as a “working royal.” His legal team contended that the decision lacked fairness. The Home Office maintained that security arrangements for Harry are determined on a case-by-case basis.
Despite the challenge made in December, Home Office lawyers assured the High Court that publicly-funded police security would still be provided to him, albeit in customised arrangements tailored to his needs.
The legal proceedings, mainly addressing security measures for senior figures, were largely conducted in private, with the ruling delivered by retired High Court judge Sir Peter Lane last Wednesday.
This follows a previous legal attempt by Prince Harry to privately finance his security during visits to the UK, highlighting concerns about diminished security following his transition away from full-time royal duties.
