Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo started its first direct flight from Odisha’s Jharsuguda to Kolkata on November 5.
On the first day, a total of 79 passengers arrived from Kolkata, while about 77 passengers departed from Jharsuguda.
IndiGo has added Odisha’s Jharsuguda as its 84th domestic and 116th total destination to its 6E network. This extension will improve mobility, accessibility, and interstate communication, benefiting the region’s industrial and corporate growth.
In October, IndiGo airport authorities said that flight services between Jharsuguda and Kolkata will commence on November 5, with flights between Jharsuguda and Bengaluru beginning on November 15. According to Indigo, the Jharsuguda-bound flight would depart from Kolkata at 5.50 p.m. and arrive in Jharsuguda at 7.25 p.m. It will take off from Jharsuguda at 7.55 p.m. and land in Kolkata at 9.20 p.m.
Meanwhile, the flight to Jharsuguda will depart Bengaluru at 10.15 a.m. on November 15 and arrive in Jharsuguda at 12.20 p.m. It will then return to Bengaluru at 12.50 p.m. and land at 2.55 p.m.
Jharsuguda, often known as the ‘powerhouse of Odisha,’ is a city in the western part of the state recognised for its strong industrial sectors, notably in metal and cement manufacture. The city is home to many different groups, languages, and customs, giving it the moniker “Little India.” While Jharsuguda is not a typical tourist destination, it does include various attractions for environment and culture enthusiasts, such as waterfalls, temples, animal sanctuaries, and natural parks.
On October 13, officials at Veer Surendra Sai (VSS) Airport announced that IndiGo will begin flights from Jharsuguda to Kolkata and Bengaluru on November 5 and 15, respectively. They will operate an ATR-72 aircraft for flights to Kolkata and an Airbus 320 for flights to Bengaluru, officials added. Both flights will be available every day of the week. Reportedly, Indigo may launch flights from VVS airport to additional cities, including Delhi, in the winter.
On the other hand, IndiGo also announced the launch of flights in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. On October 12, the airline commenced service from Jaisalmer to Delhi, and on October 29, it expanded its operation to Mumbai, Jaipur, and Ahmedabad.
