Work out on tax structure: FM to DoT
The FM asked the Department of Telecom to commission a study for working out a unified tax structure for the sector.

New Delhi: Finance Minister P Chidambaram while presenting the Union Budget 2007-08 to Parliament on Wednesday asked the Department of Telecom to commission a study for working out a unified tax structure for the sector.

Total levies in the telecom sector, including the annual revenue share, that the companies pay to the government stand between 28-30 per cent at present. But the operators have always felt that it is very high.

The annual revenue share ranges between six to 10 per cent of their revenues depending upon the circle where they operate.

"I will request DoT to constitute a committee and come out with recommendations for unified rate structure," Chidambaram said while presenting the Budget for 2007-08.

A unified tax structure has been a long-standing demand of telecom companies.
