For third day on the trot, Shubman Gill wasn’t in attendance for Team India’s practice session ahead of the World Cup 2023 contest vs Australia on Sunday. “Sick” is the official word from the Indian camp and the management is going to give the star opener every chance to recover for the tournament opener.
“Gill is not 100%, but he’s sick. So, there’s no injury concern. Gill is not feeling well. We are monitoring him on a daily basis. So, we’re going to give him every chance to recover and see how he feels. So, he’s not ruled out yet,” says Rohit Sharma at pre-match presser.

Rohit is not worried about the Gill situation at the moment and the captain added that he just wants the 24-year-old to get well. “I feel for him,” was his response to a question on Gill.
No, it doesn’t worry. I mean obviously he is sick. I feel for him. But in terms of, you know, me being the human being first, I want him to get well, not the captain thinking, oh, I want Gill to play tomorrow. No, I want him to get well. You know he’s a young guy, he’s got fit body. So he’ll recover, he’ll recover quick,” adds the captain.
Even coach Rahul Dravid sounded optimistic on Gill on Thursday. Like Rohit, coach had said that Gill isn’t ruled out of the fixture yet and is under constant monitoring of the medical team.
“Shubman Gill is feeling better. Much better than he was yesterday. We still have 36 hours to go, the medical team is constantly monitoring him. He isn’t ruled out of the game and we will see how he feels day after tomorrow,” Dravid had said during an interaction with the media.
As far as the official word from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is concerned, it’s been maintained that Gill is “under the weather”.
“He’s under the weather, the medical team is closely monitoring him. We are hoping he gets better soon. We will have to wait on more updates from the medical team,” BCCI spokesperson had said on Thursday.
Less than 24 hours to go for toss but it still is anybody’s guess whether Gill will feature in the game or not. The management continues to sound optimistic but it’s very likely that they will bench him tomorrow and allow enough recovery time for the matches to follow.
In that situation, it’s very likely that Ishan Kishan, who had long hits for two days in the nets, will open the innings with Rohit.
