Pakistan squared off against South Africa in what turned out to be a thrilling contest.
Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first. The Asian outfit posted a total of 270 runs in 46.4 overs. Babar and Saud Shakeel scored half-centuries each helping Pakistan set a competitive tally.
Shadab Khan also made a valuable contribution having pulled off a fine knock of 43.
In the second innings, Aiden Markram’s superb 91-run knock set a strong foundation for South Africa. The match though remained in the balance as Pakistani bowlers continued to pick up wickets in frequent intervals limiting the South Africans to modest partnerships.
With South Africa at 260/9 in 45.3 overs, Pakistan seemed to have gotten firm control of the game as the opposition was fighting with two tail-enders on the crease. Babar turned to his spinner Nawaz to bowl the 48th over.
Nawaz’s delivery ended up missing the mark as the ball strayed onto the leg side. This allowed Maharaj to guide the ball towards the boundary to secure a one-wicket wine
Babar was visibly quite upset over the close defeat to South Africa during the post-match presentation. He reflected on the match stating that the South Africans put up a good fight with both bat and the ball.
In their next World Cup match, Pakistan will face Bangladesh on October 31 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
