David Willey Withdraws From IPL 2024, LSG Name Matt Henry as Replacement

David Willey was earlier expected to miss the start of IPL 2024 but has now withdrawn from the entire season.

England allrounder David Willey, who was signed by Lucknow Super Giants, has pulled out from the IPL 2024. Willey has cited personal reasons behind his decision to withdraw his name from the competition.

Willey was expected to link up with LSG after missing initial few matches but is now unavailable for the entirety of the season. He was picked by the franchise for Rs 2 crore at the IPL 2024 players’ auction last December.

LSG have though named a replacement in New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry. He has been picked at his base price of Rs 1.25 crores and this will be his third IPL franchise after Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings.

Henry has though played in just two IPL matches so far, both for PBKS having taken one wicket during the 2017 season.

The 32-year-old has represented New Zealand in 25 Tests, 82 One-Day Internationals and 17 T20 Internationals so far. He has 95 wickets in 25 Tests, 141 wickets in 82 ODIs and 20 wickets from 17 T20Is.

Overall, Henry has played 131 T20s so far and has picked up 151 wickets at an economy of 8.39.

Willey is the latest England cricketer to pull out from the season after Harry Brook (Delhi Capitals), Mark Wood (LSG), Jason Roy (Kolkata Knight Riders) and Gus Atkinson (KKR).

LSG will resume their IPL 2024 campaign on Saturday when they take on PBKS at Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. The KL Rahul-led side started their season with a 20-run defeat to former champions Rajasthan Royals last Sunday.

RR opted to bat first and posted a challenging 193/4 from their 20 overs with captain Sanju Samson hitting 82 off 52. Despite Rahul’s solid 58 and a blistering fifty from Nicholas Pooran low down the order, LSG could only manage 173/6.

“The target wasn’t a lot. We made a few mistakes and will learn from them. We need to find ways to win,” Rahul said at the post-match presentation.

LSG are playing this season under a new head coach in Justin Langer who took charge after the departure of Andy Flower.
